Sustainability in Paterungan

Paterungan, meaning “the place where all things are nourished” in Kavalan language, is not only the largest gathering place of the Kavalan people, but also the largest sea-front terraced rice field in Taiwan. In the past, due to the use of chemical fertilizers in the conventional agricultural practices, the residents of Paterungan, who have been living with the sea for generations, found that the coral reef habitat, which was once beautiful, had been seriously damaged, and therefore, the Kavalan people initiated an independent coral reef monitoring program. In 2017, coral reef experts and civil society organizations jointly conducted an inspection of coral reefs and measured coral reef coverage rates that served as the basis for adjusting agricultural laws, and continued to promote organic agriculture to reduce the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

Since 2011, the Paterungan have been promoting organic farming in an eco-friendly approach, and so far more than half of the cultivated area has been converted for organic rice farming, resulting in the establishment of a vegetative buffer zone at the lower part of the Xinshe Peninsula, which is located near the sea. Observations over the past two years have shown that the nitrogen content of runoff water has decreased significantly, and coral reef restoration has also gradually yielded results.

Paterungan provides the main ingredient of “PateRungan” – Xianghai rice (literally “seaward rice”), and Unison Healthcare Group guarantees the purchase price to protect the farmers’ rights. In addition, for every bottle of PaterRungan sold, Unison Healthcare Group will provide donation for marine conservation to help Paterungan continue to protect the marine ecosystem.
